Protein Shows Promise as New Type 2 Diabetes Treatment

A single injection of a protein called FGF1 is enough to restore blood sugar levels to a healthy range, and long-term use can reverse insulin insensitivity, in rats with diet-induced diabetes, a new study shows.

“Controlling glucose is a dominant problem in our society,” says Ronald M. Evans, director of Salk Institute’s Gene Expression Laboratory one of the authors of a new paper on the study. “And FGF1 offers a new method to control glucose in a powerful and unexpected way.”

The two-fold improvement in the equivalent of type 2 diabetes in the mice was dramatic, the scientists said. And it also came without the side effects common to most diabetes treatments.
