The 30 days from Sept.15-Oct. 15 have been designated as National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States, and to mark the event, the American Diabetes Association is working to promote awareness of the disease among Hispanics.
Among activities are the Por tu Familia Conferencia, a free community-based event where people 15 and older can learn more about the causes and effects of diabetes. In San Antonio, Por tu Familia will be Saturday at The Neighborhood Place, 3014 Rivas St., from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities at Por tu Familia will include:
- Cooking demonstrations
- Health screenings
- Educational materials
More than $500 in door prizes will be given away during the event, which is sponsored by the San Antonio chapter of the American Diabetes Association. Click here to see an event flyer and click here for a schedule.
The American Diabetes Association is focusing on the Hispanic community because studies have shown that the Hispanic population has a 66 percent higher risk of developing diabetes than the general population. In addition, research has shown that:
- Non-Hispanic black and Hispanic adults were more likely to be inactive than non-Hispanic whites.
- Among people 18 and older, only 14.4 percent of Hispanics meet federal recommendations for physical activity.
- A greater proportion of Hispanic students used computers or watched television more than three hours a day than did non-Hispanic white students.
